Economic life
The Southwest region is characterized by the importance of agricultural activity, alongside tourism and industrial activities, particularly in specialized hubs. Indeed, throughout the region, agriculture remains a dominant sector both as an economic sector due to its contribution to employment and national agricultural production, especially for certain products such as dates and red meat, and also as a means of valuing natural resources and land development. There is only one industrial zone covering an area of 20 hectares within the territory of the Municipality of El Guettar. The municipality of El Guettar was declared a tourist zone in 2012 (Decree No. 283 of May 29, 2012). However, tourism has not yet been developed despite the region’s wealth of important historical and environmental sites and despite the efforts of the municipality and civil society associations to improve alternative tourism and develop “solidarity citizen” tourism.
